Grades 1–6

What matters most in Grades 1–6

In the early grades the goal is fluency: reading without sounding out every word, and knowing addition and multiplication facts without counting on fingers. When those skills are slow, every new topic takes more effort, and children can decide they're "bad at" a subject long before they actually are.

Alberta schools now screen literacy and numeracy in the early grades, and teachers often raise a concern at a parent-teacher conference. A tutor can follow up at home, working on the specific skill the school mentioned and letting you know how it's going.

By Grades 4 to 6 the work shifts from learning to read to reading to learn. Science and social studies questions get wordier, math moves into fractions, decimals and multi-step word problems, and students are asked to explain their thinking in writing. Alberta has also been introducing a new elementary curriculum, so tutors follow what your child's class is actually covering.

For parents

Signs a tutor could help

  • Homework turns into a nightly battle
  • Reading aloud is slow or avoided
  • Still counting on fingers for basic facts
  • Report card flags reading or math
  • Knows the answer but can't write it down
  • Says "I'm just bad at math"
Milestones

Grade 6 PATs and the step up to junior high

Grade 6 is the first year Alberta students write Provincial Achievement Tests, and the last year before junior high.

01

What the Grade 6 PATs cover

Grade 6 students write Provincial Achievement Tests in English Language Arts and math, and other subjects are added in some years as Alberta updates its curriculum. Your school will confirm exactly which tests your child is writing.

02

How tutors help prepare

Review starts with the skills the tests lean on most: reading comprehension, a planned written response, and math facts for the part of the test without a calculator. Tutors also walk students through the question formats so test day feels familiar.

03

Getting ready for Grade 7

Junior high brings rotating teachers, more homework and less reminding. Building simple study habits in Grade 6, like keeping track of assignments and reviewing before a test, makes the move a lot smoother.

Questions

Elementary tutoring in Calgary: FAQ

Is Grade 1 too early for a tutor?

Not if your child is finding reading or math hard. Early help is usually quicker and easier than catching up later, and sessions for young children are kept active, hands-on and encouraging.

My child is behind in reading. What will a tutor actually do?

The tutor first listens to your child read and asks about what they've read, to find where things break down: decoding words, fluency or understanding. Sessions then target that skill directly, with short, regular reading practice built in.

Will the tutor follow what my child is learning at school?

Yes. Tutors work from your child's homework, class materials and report card comments, and follow the Alberta curriculum your child's class is using, including the newer elementary math and English programs.

Do you help with Grade 6 PAT prep?

Yes. Tutors review the reading, writing and math skills the Grade 6 Provincial Achievement Tests focus on, and practise the question formats so students feel prepared rather than anxious.

Our tutors come to students' homes in NE Calgary, NW Calgary, SE Calgary and SW Calgary. We also tutor junior high students (Grades 7–9) and high school students (Grades 10–12).
