By grade

Social Studies support for every stage of school

Following the Alberta curriculum, from Grade 1 to Grade 12.

1–6

Elementary social studies

Community, Canada and the world, taught in a way that builds reading and thinking skills along the way.

Where students get stuck: Elementary social studies relies on reading for information. Students who struggle are usually struggling to pull the key facts out of a passage, or to answer a question in their own words, so tutors work on both while making the topics feel relevant.

7–9

Junior high social studies

Canadian history, government and economics, plus the source-analysis skills that high school builds on.

Where students get stuck: Grade 7 covers Canada before and after Confederation, Grade 8 looks at how worldviews shaped societies such as Renaissance Europe and Edo Japan, and Grade 9 focuses on governance, rights and economic systems. The content is heavy, and tests increasingly ask students to interpret sources, not just recall facts.

10–12

High school social studies

Source analysis, position papers and argumentative essays for the -1 and -2 streams, through to diploma exam review.

Where students get stuck: Social 10-1 explores globalization, 20-1 nationalism and 30-1 ideology. The ideas are abstract, and most marks come from written work: interpreting a source, taking a position and defending it with evidence. Students who know the material well still lose marks when their argument isn't clearly organized.

Alberta curriculum

Matched to Alberta social studies

Each Alberta social studies course is built around a central question, like to what extent we should embrace nationalism, or an ideology. Tutors help students understand that question, because it's what every unit, assignment and exam keeps coming back to.

Tutors work from the class notes, readings and assignment rubrics, and help students build a bank of examples, from history and current events, that they can use across assignments. Alberta is also updating its elementary social studies curriculum, so tutors follow what your child's class is covering.

Exam prep

PAT and diploma exam prep

Social studies is part of the Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Tests. Tutors review the year's content and practise reading cartoons, charts and short sources, which is what many of the questions are built on.

Social 30-1 and 30-2 end with a diploma exam that counts toward the final mark. The written part asks students to analyze sources and argue a position in an essay; the multiple-choice part tests source reading and course concepts. Tutors practise both under time, using released exam material.

In your home

How a social studies session works

Every tutor is vetted and matched to your student's course, and comes to your home in Calgary.

01

Connect to the big question

The tutor starts with the current unit and how it links to the course's central issue, so new material has a place to fit.

02

Read the source together

Students practise working out a source's perspective and message, then explaining it in their own words.

03

Build the argument

Sessions often end with planning a written response: position, examples and counter-argument. Parents see the tutor's notes in the parent portal afterwards.

Questions

Social Studies tutoring in Calgary: FAQ

Do you tutor Social Studies 30-1 in Calgary?

Yes. We match Grade 12 students with tutors for Social Studies 30-1 and 30-2, including source analysis and written-response practice for the diploma exam.

What does a social studies tutor actually work on?

Beyond the course content, tutors help students read and interpret sources, plan their arguments and write clear, well-supported responses.

How can my child get better at position papers?

Mostly through practice with feedback. Tutors help students take a clear position, choose strong examples from history and current events, and address the other side, then review each draft against the rubric.

Is there a Grade 6 social studies PAT?

It depends on the year: Alberta has paused or changed some Grade 6 tests while it introduces new curriculum. Your school will confirm which tests your child writes. Grade 9 students do write a social studies PAT.

Should my child take Social 10-1 or Social 10-2?

Social 10-1 leads to Social 30-1 and expects more written argument and source analysis; Social 10-2 leads to Social 30-2. Start with your school's recommendation. A tutor can help a student close to the line build the writing skills the -1 stream asks for.

Our tutors come to students' homes in NE Calgary, NW Calgary, SE Calgary and SW Calgary. We also tutor math, science, english, biology, chemistry and physics. Browse by grade: elementary (1–6), junior high (7–9) and high school (10–12).
