By grade

Math support for every stage of school

Following the Alberta curriculum, from Grade 1 to Grade 12.

1–6

Elementary math

Number sense, operations, fractions and problem solving, built on solid foundations before the harder material arrives.

Where students get stuck: Most early math trouble traces back to number sense. A student who still counts on their fingers to add 8 + 7 in Grade 3 will find multi-digit multiplication slow and error-prone by Grade 5. Fractions are the other big hurdle: many students can follow the steps without understanding what a fraction is, which makes ratios and percents feel random.

7–9

Junior high math

Integers, linear relations, algebra and geometry: the units that decide how ready a student is for high school math.

Where students get stuck: Junior high is where math turns abstract. Negative numbers trip students up in Grade 7, solving equations arrives in Grade 8, and Grade 9 brings exponents, polynomials and linear relations. Students who memorized procedures in elementary often hit a wall here, and those gaps follow them straight into Math 10C.

10–12

High school math

Course-specific support for Alberta's -1 and -2 streams, from Math 10C through diploma exam review.

Where students get stuck: Math 10C covers a lot quickly, from trigonometry to factoring to linear functions. In Math 20-1 and 30-1, the usual problem is algebra fluency: students follow the new idea in class but lose marks to factoring and sign errors. Math 30-1 adds logarithms and trigonometric identities, which reward steady practice far more than cramming.

Alberta curriculum

Matched to the Alberta math program

Tutors work from your student's actual course: the textbook or workbook their teacher uses, recent quizzes and the unit they're on right now. That keeps tutoring tied to what's being marked, not a separate program running on the side.

Alberta introduced a new elementary math curriculum in recent years, with more emphasis on number fluency, so some of what your child is learning may look different from what you remember. In high school, students choose between the -1 stream, which many university programs require, and the -2 stream. If your family is weighing that choice, a tutor can tell you honestly where your student stands.

Exam prep

PAT and diploma exam prep

Students write a math Provincial Achievement Test in Grade 6 and Grade 9. Both include a section without a calculator, so tutors make sure basic facts and mental math are solid, not just the unit topics.

Math 30-1 and Math 30-2 end with a diploma exam that counts toward the final course mark. Prep usually starts a few weeks out: reviewing the whole course, working through released questions from Alberta Education, and practising the multiple-choice and numerical-response formats under time.

How a math session works

Every tutor is vetted and matched to your student's course, and comes to your home in Calgary.

01

Start with this week's work

The tutor checks homework, the current unit and any upcoming quiz, so the session targets what matters right now.

02

Fix the skill underneath

When the same mistake keeps coming back, the tutor traces it to the skill below it, like fractions or factoring, and rebuilds it with worked examples.

03

Practise, then report

The student works problems on their own while the tutor watches their reasoning. Afterwards, parents see the tutor's notes in the parent portal.

Questions

Math tutoring in Calgary: FAQ

Do you tutor Math 30-1 and Math 30-2 in Calgary?

Yes. We match Grade 12 students with tutors for both Math 30-1 and Math 30-2, including review and practice ahead of the diploma exam.

My child is behind in math. Can a tutor help them catch up?

Yes. Most math struggles come from a few missed foundations. A tutor works out which skills are missing, rebuilds them, and then keeps pace with current classwork.

Should my child take Math 20-1 or Math 20-2?

It depends on what they might study after high school: many university programs ask for Math 30-1, while others accept Math 30-2. Check with your school counsellor about specific programs. A tutor can give you an honest picture of how ready your student is for the -1 stream and help close the gaps if they're aiming for it.

Can a tutor help with Grade 6 or Grade 9 math PAT prep?

Yes. Tutors review the year's units, drill the basic facts needed for the no-calculator section and practise the test's question formats.

Does the tutor use my child's school materials?

Yes. Tutors work from the class textbook, worksheets and returned tests wherever possible, and add extra practice where it's needed.

Our tutors come to students' homes in NE Calgary, NW Calgary, SE Calgary and SW Calgary. We also tutor science, english, social studies, biology, chemistry and physics. Browse by grade: elementary (1–6), junior high (7–9) and high school (10–12).
