By grade

Chemistry from Science 10 to Chemistry 30

Following the Alberta program of studies through Grades 10–12.

10

Science 10 foundations

The chemistry unit of Science 10 introduces naming compounds, balancing equations and the mole.

Where students get stuck: Naming ionic and molecular compounds and balancing equations take practice, and the mole is often the first truly abstract idea students meet in chemistry. These skills come up in every Chemistry 20 unit, so gaps here grow quickly.

  • Science 10
  • Naming compounds
  • Balancing equations
  • The mole
11

Chemistry 20

Usually taken in Grade 11: bonding, gases, solutions, acids and bases, and quantitative chemistry.

Where students get stuck: Stoichiometry is the big one: multi-step calculations where a single unit error ruins the answer. Students also mix up the gas laws and find intermolecular forces hard to picture. Chemistry 20 rewards steady practice; cramming rarely works.

  • Bonding & the diversity of matter
  • Gases
  • Solutions, acids & bases
  • Stoichiometry
12

Chemistry 30

Usually taken in Grade 12: thermochemistry, electrochemistry, organic chemistry and equilibrium.

Where students get stuck: Electrochemistry, with its redox reactions and cells, and equilibrium, especially acid-base systems, are the units students find hardest. Both depend on reading the data booklet's tables quickly and correctly, which is a skill of its own.

  • Thermochemical changes
  • Electrochemical changes
  • Organic chemistry
  • Acid–base equilibrium
  • Diploma exam review
Alberta curriculum

Matched to Alberta Chemistry 20 and 30

Alberta's Chemistry 20 and 30 courses each have four units, and teachers add their own labs and assignments. Tutors work from the class notes and the student's returned tests, so explanations match the methods and notation the teacher expects. Chemistry 20 is the prerequisite for Chemistry 30, so tutors check the earlier skills too.

Chemistry is also tightly linked to math. Rearranging formulas, scientific notation, significant digits and unit conversions show up in nearly every unit. When a student's chemistry trouble is really a math problem, the tutor fixes that as well.

Exam prep

Chemistry 30 diploma exam prep

The Chemistry 30 diploma exam uses multiple-choice and numerical-response questions, and students work with the Chemistry 30 data booklet throughout. Fast, confident use of its tables, such as the redox and acid-base tables, saves both time and marks.

Diploma prep reviews all four units, drills the calculation types that come up most, and works through released Alberta Education questions under time. Unit exams during the year get the same approach, one unit at a time.

In your home

How a chemistry session works

Every tutor is vetted and matched to your student's course, and comes to your home in Calgary.

01

Check the unit

The tutor looks at where the class is, the current problem set and what the next test or lab covers.

02

Work it step by step

Tutors model each type of problem slowly, writing out every unit, then have the student do the next one while explaining their reasoning.

03

Build speed and accuracy

Once the method is clear, the student practises alone until it's reliable. Parents see the tutor's notes in the parent portal after each session.

Questions

Chemistry tutoring in Calgary: FAQ

Do you tutor Chemistry 30 in Calgary?

Yes. We match Grade 11 and 12 students with tutors for Chemistry 20 and Chemistry 30, including preparation for the Chemistry 30 diploma exam.

Why is stoichiometry so hard?

It combines several skills at once: balanced equations, mole conversions, unit tracking and algebra. A mistake in any one step breaks the answer. Tutors break it into steps and practise each until the whole process is reliable.

My child is good at math but struggling in chemistry. Why?

Chemistry adds a lot of new vocabulary and concepts, like bonding, intermolecular forces and equilibrium, that aren't solved by calculation alone. Tutors help students understand what the numbers represent.

How do you help with the Chemistry 30 diploma exam?

By reviewing all four units, practising with the data booklet, and working through released diploma questions under time, focusing extra effort on the units the student finds hardest.

Does my child need Chemistry 20 before Chemistry 30?

Yes. Chemistry 20 is the prerequisite, and Chemistry 30 assumes its stoichiometry and solution skills. If those are weak, tutors review them early in Chemistry 30 so the new units have a solid base.

Our tutors come to students' homes in NE Calgary, NW Calgary, SE Calgary and SW Calgary. We also tutor math, science, english, social studies, biology and physics. Browse by grade: elementary (1–6), junior high (7–9) and high school (10–12).
