By grade

Science support for every stage of school

Following the Alberta curriculum, from Grade 1 to Grade 12.

1–6

Elementary science

Curiosity first: hands-on explanations that make topics like matter, energy and living systems click, plus Grade 6 PAT review.

Where students get stuck: Elementary science leans heavily on vocabulary and reading. A child who finds reading hard often finds science hard too, because questions are wordy and answers need explaining in full sentences. Tutors help children put what they observe into words and connect each topic to everyday life.

7–9

Junior high science

Help with the jump in vocabulary and lab-style thinking in Grades 7–9, including review for the Grade 9 PAT.

Where students get stuck: Junior high science asks for precise language and more math. Grade 8 introduces cells and optics, and Grade 9 brings chemical reactions, electrical circuits and the periodic table. Students often understand the ideas but lose marks on definitions, calculations and questions built around a data table or graph.

10–12

High school sciences

Subject specialists for each Alberta high school science course, including diploma exam preparation for the 30-level courses.

Where students get stuck: Science 10 covers chemistry, physics, biology and climate science in one year, so one weak unit can pull down the whole mark. After Grade 10, students move into Biology, Chemistry and Physics, each with its own vocabulary, math and exam style. That's why we match high school students with a tutor for the specific course.

Alberta curriculum

Matched to the Alberta science program

Alberta science is organized into units, and each grade has its own set. Grade 7 covers ecosystems, heat, structures and planet Earth; Grade 8 covers fluids, cells, optics and water systems; Grade 9 covers biological diversity, chemistry, electricity and space. Tutors check which unit your student is on and work from their class notes and textbook.

Alberta has also been introducing a new elementary science curriculum, so tutors follow what your child's class is actually covering rather than a fixed list of topics. In high school, Science 10 leads into Biology 20, Chemistry 20 and Physics 20, and from there to the 30-level courses.

Exam prep

PAT and diploma exam prep

Science is one of the four subjects on the Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Tests, and it is often tested in Grade 6 as well. Review focuses on the vocabulary and data-interpretation questions that make up much of the test.

Biology 30, Chemistry 30 and Physics 30 each end with a diploma exam that counts toward the final mark. Tutors review all four units of the course, practise with released Alberta Education questions and build the speed students need to finish on time.

In your home

How a science session works

Every tutor is vetted and matched to your student's course, and comes to your home in Calgary.

01

Check the unit

The tutor looks at where the class is, the latest notes and what the next quiz or lab covers.

02

Explain, then apply

Concepts get explained with diagrams and everyday examples, then applied to the kind of questions the teacher asks, including calculations and data tables.

03

Lock in the vocabulary

Sessions finish with a quick review of key terms and a few practice questions. Parents see the tutor's notes in the parent portal afterwards.

Questions

Science tutoring in Calgary: FAQ

Do you have tutors for Chemistry 30 and Physics 30 in Calgary?

Yes. We match high school students with tutors who specialize in the specific course: Biology, Chemistry or Physics 20 and 30, as well as Science 10.

Can a science tutor help with diploma exam prep?

Yes. For Biology 30, Chemistry 30 and Physics 30, tutors can focus sessions on reviewing course content and practising diploma-style questions.

Can you help with Science 10?

Yes. Science 10 covers four quite different units, so tutors usually focus on whichever one is giving the student trouble, while making sure the chemistry and physics skills needed for Grade 11 are solid.

Does my child need a different tutor for each science?

Not always. Some tutors are strong across several sciences. If your student is taking two very different courses, like Biology 30 and Physics 30, tell us and we'll find the right fit for each.

My child understands science in class but does poorly on tests. Why?

Often it's the question style. Tests ask students to apply ideas to new situations, read graphs and use exact vocabulary. A tutor practises those question types directly, not just the content.

Our tutors come to students' homes in NE Calgary, NW Calgary, SE Calgary and SW Calgary. We also tutor math, english, social studies, biology, chemistry and physics. Browse by grade: elementary (1–6), junior high (7–9) and high school (10–12).
