Why Grades 7–9 matter more than they seem
Math turns abstract in junior high: integers, equations, exponents and linear relations. English moves from paragraphs to full essays, and science adds lab reports and calculations. Students who got through elementary on a good memory often struggle for the first time here, and it can shake their confidence.
The bigger reason these years matter is what comes next. By the end of Grade 9, marks and teacher recommendations help decide which high school courses a student takes: Math 10C or Math 10-3, ELA 10-1 or 10-2, Social 10-1 or 10-2. Those choices shape which 30-level courses, and which post-secondary programs, are open later.
A tutor helps on both fronts: keeping up with this week's work and quietly rebuilding the skills underneath it, so Grade 10 doesn't start with a hole to climb out of.
Signs a tutor could help
- Marks dropped after starting Grade 7
- Algebra and negative numbers don't stick
- Essays are hard to start or organize
- Studies the night before and still struggles
- Unsure about Math 10C or ELA 10-1
- Missing assignments across classes

Grade 9 PATs and the move into high school
Grade 9 is a big year: provincial tests in four subjects, and course choices that set up high school.
Grade 9 PATs
Grade 9 students write Provincial Achievement Tests in English Language Arts, math, science and social studies. Tutors review the full year's content and practise both the written and multiple-choice formats.
Choosing high school courses
Course selection for Grade 10 usually happens in the second half of Grade 9. A tutor can't choose for you, but they can give you an honest read on how ready your student is for Math 10C or ELA 10-1, and what it would take to get there.
Building study habits
High school moves faster and unit exams carry more weight. Junior high is the time to practise planning study time, making useful notes and reviewing a little each day instead of cramming.
Junior High tutoring in Calgary: FAQ
My child did well in elementary but is struggling in Grade 7. Is that normal?
Very common. Junior high asks for more independent work and more abstract thinking, especially in math. A tutor can find the specific gaps and help your child adjust before the struggle turns into a confidence problem.
Should my child take Math 10C or Math 10-3?
Math 10C leads to both the -1 and -2 streams in Grades 11 and 12, while Math 10-3 leads to the -3 stream. Start with your school's recommendation. If your student is borderline for Math 10C, a tutor can help close the gaps in Grade 9 so the stronger option stays open.
Do you help with Grade 9 PAT prep?
Yes. Tutors review the year's content in English, math, science and social studies, and practise the question types on each test, including the written part of the English PAT.
Can a tutor help with organization, not just one subject?
Alongside the subject, tutors help students plan for upcoming tests and break big assignments into manageable steps. Those habits carry straight into high school.
Our tutors come to students' homes in NE Calgary, NW Calgary, SE Calgary and SW Calgary. We also tutor elementary students (Grades 1–6) and high school students (Grades 10–12).
