In-home physics tutoring · Grades 10–12

Physics tutors in Calgary.

Physics asks students to turn a paragraph about a moving object into a diagram, an equation and a number, and that translation is where most marks are lost. Our Calgary physics tutors help students set problems up properly and understand why the formulas work.

By grade

Physics from Science 10 to Physics 30

Following the Alberta program of studies through Grades 10–12.

10

Science 10 foundations

Science 10's energy unit covers motion, work, energy, power and efficiency.

Where students get stuck: Students meet velocity, acceleration and energy conversions for the first time, along with graphing motion. Weak algebra shows up immediately, because nearly every question involves rearranging a formula.

  • Science 10
  • Motion & graphs
  • Work, energy & power
11

Physics 20

Usually taken in Grade 11: kinematics, dynamics, circular motion, work and energy, and waves.

Where students get stuck: Vectors and free-body diagrams are the turning point. Students who can't break a force into components struggle through dynamics and circular motion, and projectile problems and Newton's laws need careful setup before any math happens.

  • Kinematics
  • Dynamics
  • Circular motion, work & energy
  • Oscillations & waves
12

Physics 30

Usually taken in Grade 12: momentum, electric and magnetic fields, electromagnetic radiation and atomic physics.

Where students get stuck: Two-dimensional momentum problems need clean vector work, and electric and magnetic fields are hard to visualize. The final units on light and atomic physics introduce ideas, like the photoelectric effect, that don't match everyday intuition.

  • Momentum & impulse
  • Forces & fields
  • Electromagnetic radiation
  • Atomic physics

Alberta curriculum

Matched to Alberta Physics 20 and 30

Physics 20 and Physics 30 each follow four units set by Alberta's program of studies. Tutors work from the class notes and the student's own textbook problems, using the same sign conventions and methods the teacher uses, so nothing is confusing in class the next day.

Physics relies heavily on math, especially algebra and trigonometry from Math 10C and Math 20-1. When a physics problem goes wrong because of the math, the tutor slows down and fixes that skill too.

Exam prep

Physics 30 diploma exam prep

The Physics 30 diploma exam uses multiple-choice and numerical-response questions, and students work with Alberta's Physics 30 data sheets of formulas and constants. Knowing which equation applies, and what each symbol means, matters more than memorizing formulas.

Diploma prep reviews all four units, focuses on the problem types students find hardest, like 2-D momentum and charged particles moving through fields, and practises released Alberta Education questions under time.

How a physics session works

Every tutor is vetted and matched to your student's course, and comes to your home in Calgary.

01

Start with the problem set

The tutor looks at the current homework and the questions the student got stuck on, and what the next test covers.

02

Sketch before solving

Students draw the diagram, list what's known and choose the equation before touching a calculator. That habit alone fixes most physics mistakes.

03

Check and explain

The student explains whether the answer makes sense, then tries a similar problem alone. Parents see the tutor's notes in the parent portal afterwards.

Questions

Physics tutoring in Calgary: FAQ

Do you tutor Physics 30 in Calgary?

Yes. We match Grade 11 and 12 students with tutors for Physics 20 and Physics 30, including preparation for the Physics 30 diploma exam.

My child understands physics in class but can't do the homework. Why?

Following a worked example is different from setting up a new problem. Tutors practise the setup step, with diagrams, known values and choosing the right equation, until students can start problems on their own.

How much math is in Physics 20?

Quite a bit: rearranging equations, trigonometry for vectors and reading graphs. If those skills are shaky, tutors work on them alongside the physics.

How do you prepare students for the Physics 30 diploma?

By reviewing all four units, practising with the official data sheets, and working through released diploma questions under time, with extra focus on the student's weakest units.

Is Physics 20 harder than Science 10?

For most students, yes. Physics 20 goes much deeper into motion and forces, and uses vectors and trigonometry throughout. Students who struggled with the Science 10 energy unit benefit most from starting tutoring early in the course, before the dynamics unit.

Our tutors come to students' homes in NE Calgary, NW Calgary, SE Calgary and SW Calgary. We also tutor math, science, english, social studies, biology and chemistry. Browse by grade: elementary (1–6), junior high (7–9) and high school (10–12).
