What changes in high school
Alberta high school runs on credits and course streams. Students need 100 credits for an Alberta High School Diploma, including 30-level English and social studies, and they choose between the -1 and -2 streams in English, math and social studies. After Science 10, the sciences branch into Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
The pace is also faster. Many Calgary high schools run on semesters, covering a full course in about five months, so falling behind in one unit can drag down the whole mark. Tutoring works best when it starts early in the course, not the week before the final.
Most post-secondary programs look at 30-level marks, and many ask for specific courses such as Math 30-1, Chemistry 30 or ELA 30-1. Your school counsellor is the right person for admission questions. A tutor's job is to help your student earn the marks they're capable of.
Signs a tutor could help
- A unit test mark came back much lower than usual
- Struggling in the -1 stream
- Diploma exam is coming up
- Needs a specific course mark for post-secondary
- Math is holding back chemistry or physics
- Essays come back with the same comments

Which courses have diploma exams
Diploma exams are written at the end of 30-level courses including ELA 30-1 and 30-2, Social Studies 30-1 and 30-2, Math 30-1 and 30-2, Biology 30, Chemistry 30 and Physics 30.
How diploma prep works
Prep usually starts a few weeks out: a review of the whole course, practice with released questions from Alberta Education, and timed work in the exam's format, whether that's numerical-response math or a Social 30-1 position paper.
Why Grade 10 matters too
Grade 10 sets the stream for the next two years. A solid mark in Math 10C or ELA 10-1 keeps the -1 path open, so it's often worth getting help in Grade 10 rather than waiting for Grade 12.
High School tutoring in Calgary: FAQ
Which high school courses do you tutor?
We tutor math, English, social studies, Science 10, Biology, Chemistry and Physics for Grades 10–12. Tell us the exact course, like Math 20-1 or Chemistry 30, and we'll match a tutor who knows it.
When should we start diploma exam prep?
Ideally a few weeks before the exam, on top of steady help during the course. Starting earlier leaves time to fix weak units rather than just reviewing them.
My student needs help in two different courses. Is that possible?
Yes. Tell us both courses when you get in touch. Some tutors are strong in related subjects like math and physics; for very different courses, we'll look for the right fit for each.
Is it too late to get a tutor in Grade 12?
No. Plenty of students start in Grade 12, often for a single 30-level course or diploma exam. The sooner in the semester you start, the more a tutor can help.
Our tutors come to students' homes in NE Calgary, NW Calgary, SE Calgary and SW Calgary. We also tutor elementary students (Grades 1–6) and junior high students (Grades 7–9).
